Hot stones: more than you think

Most people have an image in their head of hot stones resting down the spine of someone on a massage table, and yes, that will happen during your hot stone massage, but it’s only the beginning.

Combined with this placement approach, we also move the stones around, using them as a tool in your massage. The therapist will typically use the stones in long smooth strokes, circular movements, kneading, and rolling. (And as always, please be sure to tell us if the temperature is not working for you or if you need more or less pressure.)

And? They won’t just be used on your back! They are often also placed on stomachs, chest, palms, and feet…

We couldn’t resist using this photo, because during this time of year… when things can still feel quite cold some days and also very wet… hot stones on the feet look like a great idea. (If you want this, or anything in particular, again, tell your therapist.)

But what are some of the benefits of hot stone massage? Glad you asked:

  1. First and foremost, it’s super comforting and relaxing.

  2. The stones also “warm up” the muscles, allowing for an easier, deeper massage.

  3. Heat on an area of pain can help increase blood flow to that area and thus decrease the pain.

  4. It can be really great to have a hot stone massage later in the day because it can help you to fall asleep easier.

  5. As with all massage therapy, this is great for relieving stress and anxiety.

  6. Some research has shown some benefit to people with fibromyalgia.

  7. The added heat also helps with arthritis.

Though hot stone massage is amazing and has many benefits, there are cases where it might be contraindicated, so please, as always, tell your therapist about any health issues you are currently experiencing.
